While watching the latest season of Jetlag: The Game (which was a public transit race across Japan), one of the contestants got off a train a stop too early. He realized right after the train pulled away. In that moment, he referred to it as a fencepost error. I understood from context that he meant an off-by-one error, however I'd never heard to it referred to that way before.

I guess there are several colloquial terms for an off-by-one error:

A fencepost error (occasionally called a telegraph pole, lamp-post, or picket fence error) is a specific type of off-by-one error.
